THE TEMPEST (2)

What themes does the play touch upon? Which of them is the main one?
What is the main message of the play? Why do you think so?

  1. The play touches upon many themes like relations between a master and a servant, the supernatural, revenge, seclusion and freedom, compassion and forgiveness, loyalty and betrayal, etc. The main one for me is compassion and forgiveness, because Prospero in spite of all the difficulties and sorrows that happened to him is able to forgive his enemies and even to sympathize with their unenviable position. This quality (the ability to forgive and sympathize to someone’s sorrow) makes a difference between a true character and the others.
Hence, the main message of the play is that no matter what happened to you, it is necessary to find the ability not to do the same to people who hurt you, but to forgive them, because revenge cannot be the best solution in any case. By overcoming your anger with compassion and forgiveness, you can receive a lot more (to your soul) than by taking on revenge.

  2. The play which is under discussion raises different themes which vary from supernatural and magic to the cost of power, from family and love relationships to treachery. All supernatural and magic in this play are presented in the person of Prospero and his servants – Ariel and Caliban. This theme was very topical in Shakespeare’s time and I think that through these characters’ example he wanted to present magic not as a sin but as something that is powerful and mystical. However, the theme of treachery and forgiveness is considered to be the main one in this play. We see Prospero’s sufferings caused by his exile, and what’s more important, betrayal of his own brother Antonio. As a result, Prospero has to live in a cave with his daughter for many years in the terrible conditions. But his spiritual suffering occupies the main place here. At the beginning of the play we see that Prospero raises a storm as revenge to his enemies, but then he overcomes his hatred and finally forgives them.

  3. This particular play has different themes, like human depravity, humanity and all-forgiveness, the power of magic. And I think the main one is humanity and all-forgiveness (which somehow closely coincides with the theme of magic), as Prospero by means of his generosity and knowledge of white magic directs all characters to the right decision and action. And what is more interesting that he makes all these not weighing upon anyone, doing no harm to them.
They say: “To understand and forgive is the man’s lot.” Thus man by his nature is to forgive similar, as injury is one of the biggest sins. Nevertheless, there’s a question: why man is to UNDERSTAND and forgive. Is it possible to forgive others without understanding? The answer is on the surface: our life is unexpected and one never knows what if waiting for him behind the next turn, that’s why man by his nature and foolishness makes a great number of mistakes, from which he learns. That’s why people have to forgive each other, after all, the God will decide whom to punish and for what.

  5. The Tempest is a story about love, revenge, and greed. Unlike some other of Shakespeare's romantic comedies, the Tempest is less focused on the love story, and more on the plots of murder, and Prospero's plot to avenge himself. That’s why I guess that the main theme is loyalty and betrayal. They are linked to The Tempest's larger themes of servitude and freedom; either feeling is motivated by how each individual perceives his position relative to others. Antonio's betrayal of his brother and theft of the dukedom of Milan are the source of conflict in the play, but the action contemporary to the play follows a series of attempted betrayals. Alonso and Prospero would both be murdered by traitors, but this is thwarted by the actions of loyal characters like Ariel and Gonzalo. Loyalty and treachery also serve as the two main personality traits of the players. You can separate the loyal out, and divide the bad into those who were misguided and now repentant, and those who are just plain evil.

    1. I fully agree with this post, because in this story we are forced to face with more than just a love and revenge or greed . The story is full of mystical contexts and the blizzard of emotions. In The Tempest, power and control are dominant themes. Many of the characters are locked into a power struggle for their freedom.

  6. I think the main theme of this play is a mercy or liniency. To my way of thinking the author wanted to bring the massege that people should possess an abillity to forgive. Prospero was an indulgent man. He didn't want to take revange for his offence. He was submissively waiting for justice which finally has occured.
