What  did you learn about  Shakespeare's lost years? Which fact surprised you most and why?

  1. Having watched the video,I understand how little we know about the period in Shakespeare’s life which lasted 10 years (between the ages of 18 to 28). Nevertheless, there are some interesting theories of Shakespeare living in a Catholic family in Lancashire during the Protestant reforms. It is also believed that Shakespeare, in his early years, worked in a country as a teacher. Still others think that William was a member of the Queen's Men, a company of actors who worked for Elizabeth's Protestant propaganda. And it also remains a mystery of how a 18 year old country poor boy became the theatre celebrity so soon after he arrived in London. It is one of the great mysteries of Shakespeare’s life. It is also necessary to note that one of the interesting features of this part of the film is that there are shown some books with William’s notes in them, and moreover, we see some performances of Shakespeare’s plays.

  2. This part of the movie tells us about Shakespeare’s life when he became famous. He gave a new sense of identity, new language and new characters to the world. In the reign of Queen Elisabeth I Shakespeare became the greatest poet England has ever seen. But how could he become such a celebrity? Like himself his fame was a mystery. According to the historical evidence, William lived in Lancashire, later he joined the best actors in the country – the Queen’s Men, Queen’s own company, whose job was to prepare the country for war. It was the time when he began to write poems and plays, when he left his family. It is a bit strange that the boy from the catholic family joined the protestant company. However, that journey ended, as Shakespeare soon stroke up on his own, and not as an actor but as a writer. In 1576 James Burbage built the first professional theatre in the world, it was a wooden amphitheatre three stores high and a hundred feet across. They called it the Theatre. That was the crucial moment in the history, as that time the theatre was a new kind of experience. And when plays became the public execution, Shakespeare gave people the theatre of cruelty. As a result, the world was divided into two parts: when conscious battled with the power, ordinary people were crushed by events. The three plays showed two blood centuries of the English history; that was the moment when William Shakespeare was number one in the box-office.

  3. This part of the whole film told about the period in Shakespeare’s life which called “the lost years” because little is known about his activities between 1582 and 1592. From the video I found out that Shakespeare became a famous, great person of all times during the reign of Elizabeth I but it is interesting how he had achieved the timeless fame. He lived in Lancashire during the period of reforms, later he became a member of the Queen's Men, the Elizabeth’s company of actors working for by her order. It is an open secret that William came to London in that period of time, leaving his home and began his writing career: different poems and plays were written. Some times later the fame found him in London and gave him great popularity which is alive even in our 21 century all over the world. For me it was interesting to see the extracts from his play during the video because it is a really great performance.

  4. Episode two, In Search of Shakespeare: The Lost Years, focuses on the controversial time period between William Shakespeare's marriage at 18 and his emergence as a prominent writer at age 28. The only concrete facts about this time are that his three children were born and his contemporary rival Christopher Marlowe was killed. Presenter Michael Wood examines the various theories of Shakespeare's whereabouts. In Lancashire, it is believed he lived with a Catholic family. Tudor maps and Victorian photographs point to his first London neighborhood. Other evidence suggests he was a member of the Queen's Men, a company of actors working for Elizabeth's Protestant propaganda. The Royal Shakespeare Company also performs some early works.

  5. The episode 2 “In Search of Shakespeare 2: The Lost Years
” tells us about the next 10 years of Shakespeare’s life/. I have learnt that he got married when he was only 18. He wrote a love poem which was dedicated to his wife, and later it became the first work which brought him fame and recognition. However, this time is also known for religious persecution of all Shakespeare’s family (by that time he had already become a father of three children) by Queen Elizabeth’s strictly Protestant rule, so I was deeply introduced to the dark world of Queen Elizabeth's police state . As a result he had to survive during this hard time in a Catholic house. Nevertheless, it is one of the numerous theories of Shakespeare’s lost years. According to another theory, he is considered to be a member of the Queen's Men. It was a company aimed to propagandize Elizabeth's Protestant views and announce about any attempt of dissidence. Another myth , the death of Shakespeare’s main rival, Christopher Marlow, is also under discussion in the second episode. The outcome of his murder is known for everyone, Shakespeare became the star of Elizabethan Theatre.

  6. Michael Wood does a great job again in this documentary. He takes the viewers on a voyage to old places and times and offers us some really interesting items relating to the life of William Shakespeare, the greatest writer who ever lived. It's fascinating to see how much William Shakespeare was a man of his times. The part two examines the great mysteries of Shakespeare's life. And namely how William Shakespeare made that big leap. A poor country boy became such a celebrity so soon after he had arrived in London. I learned quite a lot about the social and material history of the time. I like episode #2 and I firmly believe that this documentary is the best introduction to the life of the Bard.

  7. Will Shakespeare was the greatest actor and writer of his time - the true icon of English heritage. He brought a new language into the society where he lived. He started his life in Lancashire which was used to be a very religious town. It was a surprise for me that that time was the opposition between Protestantism and Catholicism, the new and the old. That's why the question arises: how could he be a celebrity? There is no answer - it is a great secret.

It is worth mention that Ferdinando, his close friend from upper class wrote some of Will's play beginning, supporting his talent. The friend was very charismatic person, the representative of the Saveges family. By the way, I was surprised by the fact that the library of Shakespeare’s teacher taught him greatly. They say William worked in a country side as a teacher.

There is general feeling to believe that Queen asked him to leave the stage because his nonsocial themes in his creations. But he only gave England in its full identity. Bu there were political motives in Will's career: "Spanish Armada was on its way to the Island." The coming soon victory made a new age of optimism which gave food for meditation.

The composition of the films looks very amazing as the creators paid more attention to places Will had ever visited. There are only pictures, but not bindings themselves as there was A Great Fire in London. We may say that these places influenced dramatic impact of Shakespeare’s career.

But not only places and books made him as he used to be but also ordinary men and women. He was surrounded by famous people too and his circle included men of different professions.

All in all theater was a new experience that time. It was "Life before your eyes." Will Shakespeare’s plays was must see of the year.

  8. The lead theme of the second part of this documentary gives us a chance to explore the world of more mature William Shakespeare . Michael Wood admits, that these years were rather smooth, because the period of about a decade was rather hidden from the peoples' vision. William had to spend some time, living in Lancashire, sheltering from the anger of Elizabethan era and working as a teacher. After some time he joined the Queen's Men, a
troupe of acting people. During that time he coude improve his creative skills and know much about the world of stage. The other
matter of dispute was the fact, that after the arrival at London he rapidly became a celebrity person - an ultra race from a poor teacher, who was running around the island with friends - to a first rank man of a society.
