  1. I began reading the book “The last of the Mohicans” written by James Fenimore Cooperseveral years ago, but didn’t finish it. That time the book seemed too boring to me, but after watching the film, I’d like to read it again. It really impressed me. The film contains different problems, which we have to think about: war, patriotism, Indians the first American hero (Hawkeye) and the last of the Mohicans (Chingachgook), self-sacrifice for the sake people you love (Duncan Heyward), and of course the love power, that makes people not to surrender (Hawkeye and Cora; Unkas and Alice).
It was the third year of war between England and France for the possession of the continent.
War… As a rule each of the sides has its reasons, motives, and means. And as a rule all is fair in war. I think this saying is quite appropriate here, as during the film, it seemed to me that both of the countries used Indians; they waged war by means of Indians’ intestine strife. And if Frenchmen and Englishmen were fighting for the American colonies, then Indians – for their independence, for their tribes.

  2. I watched the film “Saving Private Ryan”. It is very hard to describe my feelings after watching this legendary and one of the strongest film directed by Steven Spielberg. I like his films, because they are always thought-provoking. This is an American drama about the American war. I do not think that the director tried to exaggerate the importance of American role in the WWII he only told us the story of 8 soldiers who were sent to save an ordinary private. We could see real emotions, courage and horrors of war. Spielberg showed us how people were changing during the war, starting life with different main aims and desires. They had to change or they would not survive. Their people were ready to sacrifice their lives in order to save Private Ryan. Moreover, I would like to say that I admire Tom Hanks who was a Captain Miller in the film; I think he is a very good actor and he “added” some points in my opinion to this film.

  3. “Enemy at the Gates” I chose this film, as it is about the battle of Stalingrad (as it seemed firstly), about the battle that was a decisive one of the Second World War; about a hero of the Soviet Union, the sniper Vasily Zaitsev. But unfortunately my expectations were not realized. The battle involved the two countries - the former Soviet Union and Germany; as a result America couldn’t show us reliable information. Besides the fact that the film partially (or it would right to say at all) doesn’t describe the battle, it was more focused on the snipers’ fight (from the Soviet Union and Germany). Maj. König was sent to Stalingrad with the aim of destroying the Soviet sniper Zaitsev; while the last one also had a mission - to destroy German. Moreover, Vassili Zaitsev was the example to follow, the hero. Having watched the film, I became interested in Zaitsev, and after reading his biography, I realized that here (in the film) the Americans also lied.
I liked the movie from the point of the actors’ performance, as it was perfect, I could feel the tension, fear, and desire to participate and win the battle.
To sum it up I want to say that this movie is good as the action, but not as a historical and documentary. I think it might be possible to do without love, because it is focused on a very different idea: at any war or battle people need a magnificent story about sacrifice and brave. They must believe in their victory; the must get hope and desire to fight; they must get examples, but examples to follow; they need heroes.

  6. There are cases when the war is the only solution; but there’re cases when the war is useless, when people die, having no idea for what they give their lives. These two alternatives we can see in two films: “The Patriot” and “The Four Feathers”. Heath Ledger starred in these films; in both films he was a soldier, but in both films he had different views on the war. “The Patriot”. The 18th century – the war for the USA independence from the Great Britain. A young officer Gabriel Martin (Heath Ledger) went to the war against his father’s will (Mel Gibson), believing that if the American people wanted to live in an independent country, then the war was the only way for that. And he was ready to give his life on the battlefield; he was ready to give his live for independence; he thought that the war changed the world and a new life would begin. “The Four Feathers”. 1884 – the Great Britain sent an expedition to Egypt to suppress the rising of Arabi Pasha. . Just before the expedition a young officer Harry Feversham (Heath Ledger) resigned. His friends Jack Durrance (Wes Bentley) and Edward Castleton (Kris Marshall), his fiancee Ethne Eustace (Kate Hudson) and, moreover, his father General Feversham (Tim Pigott-Smith) interpreted such a behavior as his cowardice and sent him four feathers (the symbol of cowardice). But Harry Feversham had another reason for that: he didn’t understand necessity of the war; why it was necessary to impose their will on another state, witch had its own life, religion and customs. He didn’t want to give his life without understanding for what. But in order to save his friend Harry had to go to the war and risk everything he loved.
Of course these films are not just about war, they’re about patriotism, honor, love and friendship. I think they’re worthy of watching, and I’m sure that neither of them will leave you indifferent.
