A CONVERSATION WITH STUART L. PIMM

Asking ‘Why Do Species Go Extinct?’

What do you think about Stuart L.Pimm and his activities? Do you think it helps the situation?

  1. Dr. Stuart L. Pimm, a 59-year-old zoologist who travels: South Africa, Madagascar and even South Florida. He won the Heineken Prize for Environmental Sciences, the Nobel of the ecology world in 2006. Why do species go exist?” and “How fast does it happen?” In 1978 he went to Hawaii with the books about the nature published in the early 1970s. His books were listing species that were extinct – or about to become so.

First of all, Dr. Pimm is working for laws to protect species. He trains young people to do the same. To my mind, it’s so nice of him. It’s very good that he is fighting against the extinction by the legal methods. His work with young generation also means that he is very kind to the nature, bringing up people who will care for the nature, as he cares. By the way he may see results of his work in his students. Every teacher wants to see the same.

Secondly, Stuart is the head of the nongovernmental organization – called Saving Species. It does what its title suggests. They have been trying to buy up degraded land to create land corridors for the wildlife. It really helps, but it takes a lot of money. It’s a very expensive way to help the nature. Personally I think, you need lot’s of wealthy sponsors using this method.

Thirdly, indigenous tribes have believes that no one owned their forest. G.P.S. can help them can record where they hunt and fish and that will help them define the forest land as theirs. From my point of view, it’s a very elasticity policy of saving the nature. When Dr. Pimm and his team help the local people maintain their traditional ways, they are helping the flora and the fauna survive.

Fourthly, the ecologist is a believing Christian. The Doctor is sure that Christians have an obligation to look after the world. But when we don’t pay attention to the nature, destroying it, we are destroying God’s creation. It’s really hard to comment this part of his activity, because of its religious subtext. But he has a point in this question: we don’t have any rights to destroy what we don’t create.

As you see from my comment I’ve checked 4 Dr. Pimm’s activities. It will be better to have more such scientists like he. I admire this person for his deeds.

  2. There are several factors that can lead to the extinction of certain animals. Human activity is usually a main cause of animal extinction. Their habitats or food sources may be destroyed, or they can be over hunted. Usually if their population numbers drop too low they don't have much of a change to recover and repopulate.I think there are numerous things that cause animals to become extinct. Disease can take over and wipe out an animals population. Being hunted by humans in large numbers to the point that they don't exist anymore. Pollution can cause the soil to become contaminated and that would leave no food for an animal to eat, so they would become extinct. I respect Stuart L.Pimm for his actions and workfor laws to protect species. He trains young people to do the same. I gues it will bring some results.

  3. I believe that there should be more people like Stuart L.Pimm. He does a great job to help protect the endangered species and the environment. For example, he started an NGO — a nongovernmental organization — called SavingSpecies.org. And it does what its title suggests. He’s been working with local conservation groups and governments in Brazil and Madagascar doing a variety of projects that will halt the potential extinctions there. Besides, it’s a well-known fact that many endangered animals live over large areas. But their populations become fragmented because of farming and development. The remaining creatures can’t find a date on a Saturday night. So Stuart L.Pimm has been trying to buy up degraded land around their broken environments and try to create land corridors for the wildlife. Moreover, his activity in these areas is very successful. For instance, in the South American region there have been a lot of illegal logs taken, because a local godfather there was getting kickbacks from loggers. Stuart L.Pimm and his friends decided to give him a bit more money and thus stopped the illegal logging. It helped the animals and the indigenous people, who were not subjected to a lot of bad things. And such examples are numerous. As for me, I think that nowadays we should care not only about money and ourselves but also about our nature and the environment. We need to protect our world and it’s up to us to defend nature, and ensure its continuing existence and future recovery. Humans can’t survive alone on this planet. We depend on every living thing for the lives we so selfishly lead, and it is our duty to protect it since we've decided it's our right to do whatever we want. We are nothing on our own. Everybody should understand it like Stuart L.Pimm does.

  4. Stuart L.Pimm is a professional biologist who is interested in his work and is trying to stop species’ extinction. His work is very important and a lot of his attempts are succeeded. On the Atlantic Coast of Brazil, he and his assistants have been trying to help save the golden lion tamarin, an endangered primate about the size of a house cat. Last year, with the involvement of local conservationist groups, they helped purchase about 270 acres of cattle pasture that separated two patches of their habitat. Reducing of deforestation is another project in Northern Amazonia that L.Pimm's group has been involved in. Thus I see that a professor and his helpers are trying to protect or save our planet. Their activity is so important because can change situation of extinction. Their organization, I mean organization of people are not a group of scholars but professionals whose main goal is to help nature and involve people in their activity.

  5. I think I it needs not only international environmental non-profit organizations, but also an NGO (a nongovernmental organization), like SavingSpecies.org, created by Stuart L. Pimm, zoologist, who holds the Doris Duke professorship of Conservation Ecology at Duke University, won the Heineken Prize for Environmental Sciences, the Nobel of the ecology world. His contribution to the preservation of rare and endangered animals is very large, as his research helps to identify reasons why species become extinct, how fast they do so, what one person can do to stop extinction. What’s more important that all his attempts for saving endangered species have been succeeded, as, for example, on the Atlantic Coast of Brazil, he with his group were trying to help save the golden lion tamarin; he also travelled in South Africa, Madagascar and even South Florida, to save the endangered Florida panther. So I completely agree with Stuart L. Pimm for the protection of endangered species and with his policy. Environmental protection is one of the leading problems of humanity, because, firstly, it is our duty to protect nature, "our lesser brethren"; secondly, the extinction of the entire populations may lead to a disruption of the food chain, thus violating the nature’s balance. And humanity is the one to blame. The most offensive is that earlier people killed animals in order to survive; but now we kill for "fun", in order to hang up the rarest animal’s fell on the wall.

  6. I fully support the arguments of this wise man . Our world is worth to protect it, and to be able to insulate the possible extinction of the most important species of flora and fauna of the planet Earth. Plus, I strongly agree with the choice of his methods to combat the extinction of natural organisms. What can we do? Of course, try to change something in the laws of governments of different countries. To shield nature lawful means - the success of any "green" man, especially in the period of the modern world, where states and their governments are too distant from other spheres of our life and the problems of society (that even sometimes I want to pick up a rifle gun and go to shake it somewhere near the government buildings with the desire to be heard.) Moreover, I want to add that his creation of the organization, which is called "Saving Species" is prohibitively really important action, for the name of nature positive benefit, as the organization has the main purpose to shield wildlife from the adverse influence of the human world, but it takes a really great financial credits. In addition to it, I want to speak positively about his deal with "outreach activities", if we are talking about his interactions with traditional tribes living among the variety of natural flora and fauna, and his clarification and explanation in order to fill the lack of knowledge about the coexistence of the natural world and human one. Honor and respect to such people who give all their hearts to the great aim - to preserve the balance of the world!
