  1. I like the story on the whole...In spite of the fact, there are no conversations at all and the story is written in the style of monologue, it was pleasant and interesting to read. At first, i couldn't understand what was going on and whose thoughts were described, there were so disorderly and curt, but then everything slotted into place. I think that it is necessary to translate the title rightly for the full understanding of the story and find out the connection between the main characters' actions and foghorns. Frankly speaking it is rather difficult for me and i am still looking for the better translation of it because i am sure it will give me the full picture of the situation mentioned in the story. I think that the story is so impressed me because of Atherton's style of writing which fully attracts your attention during the reading. The choice of words and expressions to describe this or that situation (for example the relationships between two beloved, than main heroine's feelings when she is in a hospital) perfectly pass on the emotions. All these words make you sure that not just a banal love affair is described in "the Foghorn". I believe that the theme of love and relationships between two main characters is only the way to arise more serious problems of that time.

  2. The story is impressed me so much. Despite the fact it was not easy to read only monological text that I do not like very much, I liked “The Foghorn”. The way of writing seemed to me unusual, dissimilar with earlier story we have read and the themes which were mentioned in the story were ordinary but special at the same time. Love is describing in amount of stories, novels and poems but love in this one touched me the most. The lifestory of the main character was tragic; the events she had lived though were not for a faint of heart: violation of social norms, the death of her beloved and brain fewer then. I felt with her during the story but by the end of this I did not exactly understood whether she was going to die or not. The description of her appearance, her changing one made me feel really sorry for her. All in all, I can say that I like the story and the writing style of Gerthrude Atherton.

  3. I’m deeply impressed with this story. I think Gertrude Atherton’s style of writing is peculiar and unusual as well as the story itself. The heroine’s thoughts and feelings are revealed by means of inner represented speech, helping us to understand how it was hard for her to recollect her memories. Feminism is one of the leading themes in this story. I think the heroine is a strong woman who tries to pursue independent life, free of obligations and prejudices. She is almost one against the others who don’t understand and accept her decision. What is more, she doesn’t care about their opinion, knowing and believing in what she does. Unfortunately all her attempts to do so fail with an accidental death of her lover and her subsequent brain fewer. Moreover, I also think that this story and its idea are somehow connected with Gertrude Atherton’s stifling married life. She herself eloped with her husband when she was only 19 and later had two children with him. Two tragedies changed her life completely: her son George died of diphtheria, and her husband died at sea. She was left alone with her daughter and in order to support her started writing books. So, this story is a kind of reaction towards Gertrude’s personal life.

  4. I really liked the story, as it deeply impressed me, especially with the ending, when the author "opened" the cause of the main character's disease. I think here it's possible to figure out two ideas, closely connected with each other, symbolizing cause-effect relationship. Firstly, the main character was a feminist; as having fallen in love with a married man, she broke all moral laws of the time; thus, she pursued independence life (that reminded me of another story 'The Unexpected' by Kate Chopin). And as consequence (or as a punishment) her disease followed, which could be associated with the fog, enfolded her mind. At first it was easy to understand what was happening, and why some thoughts began without ending; but then the story absorbed me in spite of the fact that it was a bit difficult for me to appherend the whole story.

  5. I like the story and the way is's organized and written. Inner monolougue expresses all pissible feelung and emitions of the main herione. After reading, I'm full of different thoughts. I'm constantly analyzing the sudden ending of the story Was it a real punishment for sin or just a combination of circumstances? I'm waiting for my reding lesson to answer this question. I'm impressed deeply but my quesions about this story don't leave me. Oh,ok.Fog...Alcatraz...Brain fever...Are they symbols? Unusual style, unusual way of writing, unusual feeling after reading the story.

  6. The story is unique in its way, to be honest it awoke my interest. I've found out that Gertruda Atherton, like many other authors had her own style of writing and you can see it in this particular short story. I suppose that the author's purpose was to show us a strong heroine, who fights for her independence despite the canons of that time, perhaps it was the author's reaction to her stifling married life. Anyway a lot of things still remain unclear. It'd be nice to dig out the truth.

  7. I like this story especially for it's plot . Frankly speaking I'm a fan of stories where one of the main theme is love. Thus the story is very interesting and exciting. It impressed me greatly and I enjoy it the most in comparison with all our stories for home reading this year.On the other hand it's rather difficult to read the stories which consist only of monological text. Also it was difficult for me to find out main idea which author tried to express. So I spent I much time trying to understand it.

    1. As a rule, the only idea they (romantic stories) tend toexpressis that love makes the world go round.

  8. This story seemed to me interesting first of all because of its structure. It is presented as a flow of main heroine's feelings, thoughts and inner speech by means of which we trace the plot. Such an author's trick is quite interesting for me because it helps to plunge into the inner world of characters that allows to understand the main idea and sense better. So it helps me to realize that the main character possessed a strong spirit in spite of dramatic situation with her life. Although lots of things remain unclear for me, I find this story very pathetic and dramatic.

  9. I absolutely agree with the majority of my group mates that it's really difficult to read a story which consists of only monologue speech. "The Foghourn" isn't an exeption of the rule. As for me, I have to re-read it twice. Only after this process I could understand what the story is about.
I like it. Yes. It's not my favorite genre - love and memories - but Gertrude Atherton did all her best to attract a reader to her book. There are lot's of ideas of the story which are nowadays. It makes the story timely.
I also agree with the group mates that the structure of the story is unusual. Questions help me to find what I need. It's a great surprise for me that story is told by the raving woman.
I recommend you to read it. Hope, you will like it. I'm sure we are to spend much time today to come to agreement to the story.

  10. I like this story , really. The style of writing of this work is obviously something very similar to the "stream of consciousness" method, that was very popular among modernist literature society of the 20th century and that was coined by philosopher and psychologist William James in his "The Principles of Psychology" . So, and in this story this complex psychological imprint of the author's story experience and character's feelings can be clearly seen. The whole story seemes to be full of gray mist that envelops this monologue , that as long as the destiny . The love story, with heavy dashes through the veil of darkness and human fear and helplessness of a human - like a unknown signal of an old shipborne vessel foghorn , going through the sea of mist, trying to point the right way for us.
