Olympics 2012: the alternative medals table

http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/datablog/2012/jul/30/olympics-2012-alternative-medal-table

What do you think about these medals tables? Are they more accurate?
What is the best way of judging the Olympic Games, in your opinion?

  1. In tiny countries there are not so many professional sportsmen to choose from. Thus it is harder to form a good team, that can compete with larger nations. It is always funny to see the representatives from big countries ( i mean the number of sportsmen taking part in a particular kind of sport)and then we have another country, e.g Iceland. Everything becomes clear. The population is the key factor which must be taken into account. I also share Christoforos Anagnostopoulos oppinion: 'The simplest approach is to divide the number of medals by the population of each country.'

  2. I think in some ways the alternative medals tables are not fair. It’s not the USA or other large countries’ fault that the little countries haven’t many professional sportsmen. It’s natural that countries with large population and many good sportsmen win many medals but, by the way, they reach them not only by quality but by quantity. The number doesn’t influence sportsmen’s skills. Maybe it will be useful to make the number of people in each team more or less equal. But it’s difficult because some countries are introduced only by 10 people. Then it’s necessary to limit the number of sportsmen in each team to make the small countries more competitive.

  3. The population size plays one of the most important role in the forming of a sport team, because in this case we have a possibility to choose from many candidates and as a result there is a great competition between them to get into a national team. This competition inside the team helps to bring the sportsmen up to the higher standarts. As for the alternative medals table, I don't think it is more accurate, because, as Julia said, it's not Russia or Chine's fall that there is the small number of sportsmen and a population as a whole in other countries. I don't believe that the equalization of the number of athletes in each team will change the situation in the positive way. If the country such the USA have a lot of swimmers who are able to achieve fascinating results, represent their country with dignity and (what is the most important from the financial point of view)become the reasons for people to buy the expensive tickets performances, for what should we do it?

  4. I think that the sizes of the country and its population are the key factors in forming a national sport team. In other words the bigger the country the bigger its population, the bigger the population the more people who do different kinds of sport. So there is an opportunity to choose the best candidates for any competition, including the Olympic Games. As a result, such big countries win lots of medals, but I should agree with Julia that they reach them not only by quantity, but also by quality. As for smaller nations, some of them tend to win medals in a few sports where they are particularly strong - look at Georgia or Jamaica for example. So in this case I think smaller countries should also develop other kinds of sports or maybe, as Julia said before, it's is necessary to limit the number of sportsmen in each team to make the small countries more competitive.

  5. I quess the places at this chat are equal to the status of the contries.I can't say I know the right way of judging the Olympic Games. May be it's better to balance the number of medals against amount of participants.

  6. So, I should say, that there is no difference in the size of the country and the number of active. I want to give you my example, my experience. Sorry for offtop. So my aunt has 12 years old boy, Pasha. And hi is one of the best Freestyle swimmers at his age in his school ( there are about 10 or 15 great swimmers in the school). And he with his mother have to drive to the nearest swimming pool, specially equipped for such swimming for more than hour BY CAR , because there in no pool at school. And traffic jams may collide them even more. So , we have such problem - Good Infrastructure - Poor Sportsmen Number and vice versa. So, the number of our future medalists should be supported by the government in a way of WISE prioritizing and selection of effective initiatives. And the number of medals in the world can show us the real state of affairs in each country. Our Motherland Russia can easily beat all these medal records ( not WR and OR, but the quality of real wins ). Nice topic!

Whatever you say, it is true. But there are much more pools nowadays than we used to have a few years ago. Think of it, Rome was not built in a day!

  7. I'll say that: everyone deserver what he is really worthy. I mean, victory depends on different cases. Firstly, it depends on what the order in the following country is. If the government invests proper money in sports (in our case), then coaches and sportsmen are supplied with everything they really need. But if sports is little provided, then there will be proper results. Secondly, victory depends on the fact whether sportsmen participate for their country, its honour or just for money. And thirdly, everything depends on the population of this or that country. If it's small than there is a little amount of sportsmen.
Speaking about the best way of judging the Olympic Games, it's difficult. It's difficult because of the amount of rules and demands, which I don't know. So I have no idea adout the best way of judging the Olympic Games. Only God knows it.

  10. To my way of thinking, the real results depend on concrete sportsman and on his own fighting spirit, his work, his efforts and preparedness. Certainly, the goverment, the size of country and population play significant role in the development and preparedness of sportsmen, but all of this is secondary. Every sportsman participates first of all for himself. And his victory reflects his own services, but not services of his country. As for the best way of judging the Olympic Games, in my opinion, the traditional one is quite well.
P.S: I'm sorry for being late to comment on this discussion((
