  1. I watched the video about Vincent Van Gogh “Portrait of a Prostitute” (1885) which belongs to the 19th century Post Impressionism. In this case it is necessary to note that after having worked in the Netherlands for a few years, a period Van Gogh concluded more or less with his masterpiece “The Potato Eaters”, he thought he had to go to Antwerp and Paris and try to make city-work that sold. Vincent thought that views of the city and portraits would appeal to a wider audience. He went to an art school in Antwerp for a while and tried to paint portraits. But he didn’t have much money for models, so he asked people who didn’t charge a lot. And the prostitute in “The Portrait of a Prostitute” is one of them. Van Gogh painted her with rather loose brushstrokes. The colors are quite bright. He wanted to depict a certain type. In this case, a woman of the night and that’s very clear because of her plunging neckline, visible necklace and red lips. And as a nice accent, he used a drop of white paint to give her a pearl earring. All in all, Vincent Van Gogh is a great artist. I think that his portraits, as well as “The Portrait of a Prostitute”, strive to express the spirit of his age and are executed in his uniquely expressive style.

  2. I have chosen the video named “Giorgione: Portrait of a Man” which was created supposedly in 1506 and at least the description on the back pointed out that year. The painting was a great work of Giorgione, who occupied a very important place in the history of art. He was the first artist who could paint the softness of hair with warm flash and in this particular picture he used a five-o’clock shadow on the face. “Portrait of a Man” belongs to High Renaissance of Venice and is a very rare, very important work. It is a picture which you are looking at again and again because it does not give one impression or one secret. Giorgione did not use the way of describing individual details but anyway “Portrait of a Man” as a completed work. According to the speaker, this portrait operated in the same way as Mona Lisa does. The artist has created a masterpiece which keeps our attention and becomes interesting even if we do not know the sitter is. I like the painting because it not usual one and convey all emotions and feelings of that Man.

  3. The family portrait of George Washington (“The Washington Family”), the first president of the US, was painted by an American artist Edward Savage in 1789 – 1796, during Romanticism. Here the president is shown in military uniform. His black hat and sword are rested on the table near his hand. Across the table is his wife Martha. The young boy and girl are the grandchildren, George and Eleanor. Their house servant stands on the left behind them. Martha and Eleanor both had a map of Washington D.C. Martha uses a fantail in her hand to point out the the new street in the capital city. The curtains are pull back to show the bank of the Potomac River. Though I haven't heard of Edward Savage and “The Washington Family”, I really like it, as the portrait is very detailed, every fold on the clothes is painted; there are even no visible strokes, though Savage was a self-taught painter. What is more interesting that the portrait is nine feet high and the figures are almost life-size.

  4. I’ve decided to watch the video called “IN THE FRAME: VAN GOGH'S SELF PORTRAIT”. In spite of the fact it lasts only 3 min 20 sec, I think that it is very useful and includes much valuable information. I really like the beginning of the video- it’s rather unusual. It’s short animated cartoon which I interpret as the way people explore paintings, thus becoming the part of art themselves. The video is connected with the celebration of 125 anniversary of The Detroit Institute of Arts. Through its history, the museum exhibition has grown greatly and consists of many works which represent the broad range and depth. The director of D.I.A. considers that one of the most outstanding one is Van Gogh’s self portrait painted in 1887 . He had been painted it for seven years (!) and it sounds really extraordinary to think the distance he came in this 7 years. His self portrait is considered as a masterpiece and had proved Van Gogh as the brilliant painter, and as a genius representative of post impressionism and pointillism due to innovative technique he used. Now his works are easily recognizable for Van Gogh’s particular technique of portrait painting. This picture is also famous thanks for his history because it is the first picture to enter the US museum, thus symbolizing the new stage of the development of the world art. All in all, Van Gogh’s all paintings, and his self – portrait in particular have proved him as a genius who didn’t follow this or that art movement or use particular technique, but created a new one – his own unique style.

  5. I have decided to watch the video about Ernest Hemingway by Warren Perry. The video seemed to be unusual, I was watching and waiting when the speaker would start the theme of art, especially drawings, but there were only biographical facts of the man-of-literature. Here they are:

    1. 1928 - Ernest became the master in literature
    2. among his best friends was Pablo Picasso
    3. in his books the author describes sport of all kinds such as ball-fighting, hunting and fishing
    4. Hemingway’s passions were women and alcohol at the same time
    5. 1954 - he awarded the Nobel Prize
    6. he changed the literature of the 20th c.
    7. 1961 - he went away

It is the extraordinary video I would say. :D

  6. I've just watched a video in which Warren Perry discusses a 1945 portrait of Franklin D. Roosevelt, by artist Douglas Chandor. Then Warren Perry follows up with a rhetorical question:'What are all the hands in this portrait?'Actually this work was intended to be a study for a much larger work of not only President Roosevelt but also of Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin as they met for the proceedings of the Yalta conference in early 1945. In the left hand corner of this work we can see a group portrait of these men. I am really amazed at the accuracy of the portrait, its size is also impressive. This portrait in on view in the NPG's exhibition "America's Presidents".

  7. I've seen video about Van Gogh's Self Portrait which belongs to the 19th century Post Impressionism. We should know that Van Gogh did not have money to pay models to pose for portraits nor did he have many people commissioning him to do portraits, so Van Gogh painted his own portrait. Van Gogh did not see portrait painting as merely a means to an end; he also believed that portrait painting would help him develop his skills as an artist. Van Gogh used portrait painting as a method of introspection, a method to make money and a method of developing his skills as an artist.

When Van Gogh first began painting he used peasants as models. After this stage, he worked more on experimenting with his use of color in painting landscapes and flowers, primarily because he could not afford to pay models.
