  1. 'First Night' by M. Burgess is not an easy read, many aspects of this story still remain vague for me. In this story I traced the character formation of the main heroine, Mary. As for Will, he stays the same. He treats Mary as a child throughout of the story, although she is already seventeen. I find the plot and the ideas really interesting and unusal, even though I had some difficulties while reading this piece of writing.

  2. I completely agree with Julia’s opinion as I had the same problems while reading. In spite of the fact that I like the story on the whole and it is really breath taking and keeps you and your attention to be strained, I had to re-read some moments for full understanding while reading. However, such vogue pieces of the story have some advantages at the same time – they make you to pay all your attention on the text and concentrate on bringing what you have read together. The story raises different themes and I hope I Won’t lose them in my interpretation. As for the story on the whole, it must be mentioned about descriptive paragraphs which play important role there as they give us more details about both internal and external “world” of the main characters. All in all, I think that it is the graphic example of throes of creation that proves opinion (which I share) that a talent is a gift and punishment at the same time

  3. It's rather interesting story, where the author uses discriptive details to avoke a distinctive mood as well as to convey a memorable picture. Thus here is something to think about, mainly about talent, as it's something that can make any human action attractive, brings a lot of pleasure from the perception of this activity, like watching a theatrical performance ( like the First Night). It can make a man cry and laugh, even if he considers himself a man with a stony heart. But at the same time, we don't think how difficult (sometimes painstakingly) it was for the artist to create such a masterpiece!

  4. It is a very interesting story. I think it shows us the huge powerful effect of art (the theatrical performance) on people. True art (in the story it’s Will’s new play) can promote different emotions in people, keeping them in silence together, crying, and feeling pity or whatsoever (like during the first performance of “Hamlet”). Art builds connections between people. Art encourages interaction and challenges perceptions. True art inspires people. Besides, artists connect with our perceptions in order to see what emotions, memories, reason and response are triggered (Shakespeare did the same when he went to the standing seats in the theater to see the reaction of the public). Art also opens your imagination and sometimes changes your perspective on objects and even can change your life. But for the artists themselves, the process of creating new work is both exciting and painful (in the story are well-shown Will’s throes of composition).

  5. This story seemed to me an interesting one because William Shakespeare’s, whom I admire a lot, was the main character of it. His talent and hard work (I mean the episode when he was not satisfied with the play and wanted to improve it) brought great success for him. The author used a lot descriptive adjectives and other methods to express the idea of the text. The power of art and how it influences audience is the headline of the whole story. We saw the success of Hamlet and what people felt about it. The story was pretty clear for me while reading but some moments were difficult to understand.

  6. I like the story because its beautiful language and the atmosphere of mysteriousness. While reading I hear a storm of applause and feel excitement of the audience. I think that art has a strong power in expressing every possible human feeling and emotion. It's an inspiration and can touch the thinnest strings of our soul. The plot of the story is very interesting and breathtaking. In my opinion, it's a worth-reading story.

  7. This story is really interesting and at the same time rather difficult to read , so that I've read it several times in order to understand the author's message. On the whole the story is instructive and helps us to understand better what the art really is. Moreover the author shows us different sides of art and the ways it may influence people. To give us more details the author uses a great deal of descriptions , so that we can understand the characters in a better way.

  8. Epigraph
If you are not Novikava Yulia Borisovna, you may not read this paragraph. I'm sorry for being late with my commentary, but it is my mission and my task which I should do, that's why I make a decision to leave it. I ask you not to think that I didn't know what to write, because I was not ready with my question-task and interpretation-task for the lesson on home reading, because you have my note book and can see their the whole information. I also don't ask you to put me a point for this commentary as you usually do for those who leave them. I am really sorry.

No, I'd like to share my own opinion about the story by M. Burgess which is called "First Night". I really like it. The language of the story is very bright. It brings me to remember our classes on "The history of English Language". Thank you, the story, for it. The subject of the story is really interesting; it shows us the life of William Shakespeare. By the way, majority of our third year cores have already seen the film "Anonymous" which also illustrates us the other angle of Shakespeare’s life. From my point of view in the story we can see how the art, the great peace of art may open a way to one man and close it to another. I think that "Hamlet" makes Will to go the other way, though Marry stands with her previous feelings. That's why Will is round character but the girl is falt one.

  9. Not for the points, but for my duty.

"All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players...". The story vivid image of Shakespeare's quote . Actor is not the one who wears a mask - because nowadays people have a very strong ability to make any illusion of your mood , to hide soul, to open heart or not to open your heart. The power of art is eternal, it connects us with the beautiful parallel Terra. The main aim of art - to pierce the iceberg of neutrality, to make people feel something, anger or satisfaction , sacred serenity or rage and furious delight - but to feel. In today's extra-rapid world huge mass of people forget about theaters, art-galleries - but our world has the ability of circular motion - and man's love for beauty will come back after billions of years, that was given to the Earth.
