  1. I’d like to single out this story from all other ones which we have read on our Pleasure Reading classes. It’s very fascinating story with very interesting and even unpredictable (for me) ending. At first, in the middle of the story, I have made some conclusions which then were completely changed at the end. I like the way the author structures the story and how he shows us the power of art as well as such a discrepant notion as talent in art. Charles, who is under psychological pressure and financial dependence from his mother tries to do his favorite work – painting. Even after Mendoza’s (fake in fact) disapproval who is the model to follow for Charles, he doesn’t give up, feeling painting as his sole vocation. In fact, his paintings are ill-drawn and ill-conceived but they are full of enthusiasm, which is an important part of his talent. Then, a few years later, Charles learns drawing techniques and as a result improves his talent. All in all, being an artist means not just to have talent which is God’s gift, but also work hard.

  2. This story impressed me and I like because oppositions of the characters. Mr. Mendoza, Mrs. Burtneshaw and Charles are completely different, they are people who act and behave in their own ways. My thoughts and feelings towards them were changing. Mendoza surprised me because having agreed to disapprove Charles’s painting, he had a plan how to help him later. I have the opposite attitude to the woman because she seemed to me cruel and disinterested in her son’s dreams. She did her best to make him stop to draw. Charles was not interesting in politics but she did not care that shows her character. Charles, in his turn, did not give up and improve his talent continuing to draw and using new techniques. I think that this story is very interesting because you cannot predict its ending and understand the actions of the characters.

  3. I like this story. I think it shows us that you need not lose your heart in a difficult situation for “When things are the worst they are sure to mend” (the same happened to Charles). Besides, it is very important to assert your rights: you should be able to make others admit your own interests, desires and personality, because other people cannot live your life: everyone has its own views, opinions, talents, and abilities. In this case Charles did well. He, in spite of Mendoza’s negative judgment, was not afraid to lose his mother’s heredity and to live his own life as a painter, which eventually, with his own enthusiasm and desire to succeed (and of course with Mendoza’s money), brought him recognition as a talented artist.

  4. This story caused quite contradictory feelings for me. At first sight I didn't understand why Mr. Mendoza behaved in such a way and disapproved of him. Because he seemed to me an honest man I didn't expect him to agree with Mrs. Burtenshaw's conspiracy. I judged his act as a betrayal of Art. But then I realized that it was just his lesson for her to shoe that Art is not sold.

  5. I like the story, especially the way its themes and characters were represented. Till the end I couldn't decide on my attitude to the characters. But one thing was clear to me: if you have the talent, you need to develop it. Moreover, a special role plays a person, who can discern an artist in you, help not to ruin your talent despite the public opinion. Thus just Mendoza could appreciate Charles' paintings and to direct his abilities to development of talent, while the boy's mother wanted to see him in politics.

  6. Well, I like this story, it has so warm charm. Really, it's very difficult to be talent and don’t have any support from your nearest and dearest. Author wanted to show that only we ourselves are able to decide who we can become, and if you have a talent you shouldn't give it up, but develop it and make it perfect - as Charlie was able to do , even with the aggressive opposition of his mother ( but with the hidden patronage of Mendoza). It’s really important to follow you dream and do everything for it as it’s better to act than to ignore the world of perspectives and opportunities.

  7. I like this story a lot. The way the author presents chapter number four(in one sentence!)is quite unsual, but still substantial. As for my overall impression, I think that Charles is worth admiring because he didn't give up his hobby and did what his heart told him to do, despite the fact that his mother disapproved utterly of his decision to devote one's life to Art. It seems to me that Mendoza foresaw the outcome of the affair, as if he knew from the beginning that Charles won't surrender. So, achieving success requires effort, endurance and of course strong will!

  8. Well this story seemed interesting to me. Firstly I was disappointed by Mendoza's behavior and thought that the title of the story fully reflected the actions of the painter. Then I realized that Mendoza wasn't so ordinary person , his act served as a lesson to Charlie's mother , because true artist would never betray art.

  9. Well, once again the big story to read. I like it nevertheless. The structure of the story which has been chosen by the author is really interesting. It's not a secret for everyone that parents want their children to continue not only a generation of a family, but also the business which a family possesses. Our example is not the exception of the rule. The old English proverb says: "The apple does not fall far from the tree" but it's not the true, according to the example of the story. There is an opposition between two things: talent and career. The son dicedes to make pictures, though the mother wants him to be a politician. That's why the self-determination of a young man ply a great role in the story. He has to decided to himself what he wants to do in his life and finally he manages to solve the problem.

In conclusion of my comment I dare say that you can make a career any time, but talent is a thing which should be improved, progressed as sooner as it's possible, especially when you are young and is capable of doing your favorite hobby.

  10. I like the story. It impressed me deeply because it is thought-rovoking, moving and touching. I was inspired by Charles strong desire to be a great artist despite the fact he was discouraged. He didn't giva up his hobby and wasn't afraid of difficulties. And this story makes me think that when you get into a tight place and everything goes against you, till it seems as though you could not hang on a minute longer, never give up then, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn.
