MEET THE ARTIST series from ArtBabble

What is so unusual about the artist and his or her manner of painting? Where does he or she find inspiration? Do you like the artist's works? Why/ why not?

  1. Luis Jimenez worked in the traditional process that had been used for centuries, but with various materials. I think, his works are recognizable, because they are bright and colourful. Luis found his inspiration in his background, roots and place of living (Texas). So his large fiberglass figures capture the colour and vigour of Hispanic-American women and men, for example, Fiesta. As for me, I find his works very beautiful, and as far as I'm concerned, Luis' massive fiberglass sculptures add beauty and provoke discussion. His art is passionate.

  2. Martina Lopez creates new photographic works by assembling and manipulating existing images.By extracting people from their original context and then placing them into fabricated landscapes, she retells a story of their being, one which allows the images to acquire a life of their own. I quess she finds inspiration with the help of her family's photographs as a way of reconstructing memories and exploring feelings of loss and change.I like her works because of their unusuall style and the mood they give to the viewers.

  3. Kathy Vargas’ works impressed me greatly. As she said she is not a good painter but her talent is in photography. Her family and cultural influences helped her to make magnificent photos. Vargas devoted a lot of her works to her family, to several generations of it. She wants to speak about the world and photography is suited for it in her opinion. She uses double exposures done by four or five cameras; but photos are still dark and had color. Her works are about everything: life, death, social problems and political themes. I like her works because they are so unusual, I did not know about this method of photography but was impressed having seen Kathy Vargas’ works.

  4. I’ve chosen to watch the video about Muriel Hasbun. She is a photographer and it was very interesting to find out why she has chosen such kind of job through her story. As Hasbun is metisse, she is inspired mainly by her roots (Her father is a Christian Palestinian and her mother is French of Polish-Jewish origin.) I think that her style of photography is remarkable one as she tries to learn her religious and cultural background through it, and we may find it in many of her works. For example, the pictures of Holocaust and life of Christian Palestinians in Latin America are photographed by her. Besides she believes that they perfectly reflect her personality. I like such kind of works as they may tell us not only about what we see in a picture, but also about their author, his life story and perception of life. I completely understand Hasbun’s feelings toward mystical power of photography – it records what was there and what is no longer there… (I like her statement!) I believe that photos, as well as art in general, are the perfect way to create the dialog with the past. All in all, I become interested in her works and now I am searching for some more information about Muriel Husbon and her other works.

  5. William Christenberry painted his first sight of the country store ‘A River House’ in his childhood and that was the beginning of that fair with the found objects. And just having them on his wall became his inspiration. William works with found objects and constructs buildings, based on something that really exists, but some of his pieces are fragments of his memory. He tries to build these structures too close to the original ones, because it is his satisfaction when his pieces work. As for me, I like the artist’s works, as some of them carry unusual and mysterious content; while others are very realistic.

  6. I have chosen David Beck as the representative of the art. From my point of view he looks like a Frenchman, but truly speaking he is Englishman. If we are going to speak about his creative work it’s necessary to point out that he makes movie house and he really is fond of his business. But before the house will be made he is sitting in the dark without somebody else and concentrates on his future work. That time he finds inspiration. He likes the whole experience of being surrounded by his works. They remain hem about his past years of creation. He is sure that any movie has its own different finishes, but all of them depend on the work of the man-of-art, like he himself. He does all his best concerning his job, because he wants his work to convey the actions of real people: kisses, smiles, tears and so on. His claymation is full of human emotions and deeds. David prefers to work globally and he concentrates his talent on the world. He likes what he does.
To my mind the most unusual part of his works is that they aren’t beautiful and really realistic at the physical side, but on the other hand works have the same emotions as people.
I like the artist and his works. They influences me greatly. I think David is the fan of his business. I’d like to say that background music in the video is really spiritual. It helps to plunge into the artist’s story. I recommend you to watch this video.

    1. The piece is difficult to judge, as grammar is really faulty!

  7. I've just watched a video about one of the greatest American Abstract Expressionist painters Grace Hartigan. In this video Grace Hartigan reveals her life story in brief. She gives some comments on what happened when she had left New York and found herself in a provincial town. She felt extremely isolated as she had no friends there. She, however, made her own studio there and kept on creating masterpieces. 'Pallas Athena - Fire', 'Grey Eyed Athena', 'Pallas Athena Earth' are the paintings that impressed me most of all. They are completely abstract, you just need to use your imagination and to attempt to understand the artist's message. Hartigan's belief that painting must have 'content and emotion' continued throughout her career. I think she managed to forge a new kind of painting based on bold gesture and sensuous color.

  8. Will Barnet paid his attention for color, but he didn't use usual sets , because his colors wouldn't be realistic in this case.He found inspiration in his family. When his son was born , he painted a series of paintings about his family . Compositional organization is the key of his works. The object of his paintings were not just shapes, and at the same time they were not realistic. He crated his own language , language of abstraction that really exists.I like his works because his style of drawing is really unique , his abstractions are really remarkable , and I was disappointed by the news that his later work wre more representational and focused almost entirely on the female form.
